Japanese Garden Plants: Maples, Blossoms and Shade
Japanese garden plants for US gardens: Japanese maple care from our guides, plus cherry blossom, azalea, camellia, osmanthus, iris and hosta coming soon.
A Japanese-style planting leans on the Japanese maple for its focal tree, and our one published guide here says that tree wants shelter more than it wants sun. Acer palmatum is rated for zones 5B through 8B (UF/IFAS), needs evenly moist, well-drained soil, and prefers a spot protected from wind and late spring frost. This collection starts with that tree and lists the other plants we plan to cover.
What we have published
Japanese maple has a full care guide plus two supporting pages: pruning Japanese maple and Japanese maple in a pot. Those pages compare Clemson, NC State and UF/IFAS where they disagree, mostly on sun in hot climates and the timing of cuts. Our sources do not give a planting season, planting depth or winter protection steps for the tree, so we do not either, and the guide says so plainly.
A shrub to plant near it
The maple’s sun rule depends on where you live: the farther south and hotter, the more shade it needs (UF/IFAS, Clemson), and the farther north, the more sun it tolerates (NC State). Our hydrangea guide gives morning sun and afternoon shade for the bigleaf type, and rates it for zones 5 through 10, so the two overlap in zones 5 through 8. That makes hydrangea a reasonable shrub to look at for a maple’s bed. It is our pairing idea, not a source’s recommendation.
Still to come
Cherry blossom, azalea, camellia, osmanthus, iris and hosta show below as tiles without links. They are the plants we will cover next for this style of garden. We have not published their guides, so we make no claims about their zones, light or bloom time, and we say nothing about garden history beyond the plant names.
Where to start
- Choosing a tree? Read the Japanese maple care guide first.
- Short on space? See Japanese maple in a pot.
- Reaching for the shears? Check when to prune.
- Need a shrub for the same shade? Look at hydrangea care.
- Wondering where a foliage tree fits in the year? The bloom calendar explains why the maple has no flower row.
