Prune bougainvillea after it flowers, with the main cut in late winter or early spring, and trim lightly at other times. UF/IFAS says the best time to prune is late winter or early spring after it flowers, or at the start of the rainy season. NC State says to prune immediately after flowering to maintain a desired shape. UF/IFAS also warns that pruning too often can cut off new blooms. This guide sits under our bougainvillea care guide.

When to prune

The sources give several windows, and they overlap more than they conflict.

Late winter or early spring

After it flowers, or at the start of the rainy season (UF/IFAS, two pages).

Right after flowering

NC State says prune immediately after flowering. Mississippi State says prune after each flowering cycle to remove spent blooms and encourage new growth.

Severe pruning

Clemson says severe pruning should come after summer flowering, in late fall or very early spring. UC IPM says not to do any major pruning until after the bloom period.

Light trimming

UF/IFAS Charlotte County says bougainvillea can be trimmed lightly year-round.

The shared rule is to hold back major cuts until the bloom period is over. Where the sources differ is whether the main cut comes straight after flowering (NC State, Mississippi State) or in late winter and early spring (UF/IFAS, Clemson). Watch when your plant finishes flowering and make the main cut after that.

What to cut

  1. Remove dead wood as it appears. Clemson says dead wood should be removed as it appears.
  2. Cut suckers from the base. Clemson says to prune suckers from the plant’s base to encourage top growth.
  3. Remove spent blooms after each cycle. Mississippi State’s advice for container plants, to encourage new growth.
  4. Save big cuts for after the bloom period. UC IPM and Clemson both put major pruning after flowering.

After frost damage

Arizona says frost-damaged plants such as bougainvillea should be cut back to living wood after all danger of frost has passed or when regrowth resumes. Our bougainvillea care guide covers frost protection.

Dwarf types and cuttings

UF/IFAS Charlotte County says natural dwarf types need next to no pruning. UF/IFAS also says the smaller cuttings that come from pruning can be used to propagate new plants.

Mistakes to avoid

What do I do about frost-damaged bougainvillea?

Arizona says to cut frost-damaged plants back to living wood after all danger of frost has passed or when regrowth resumes.
